Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is a multifaceted crime that requires every response to be uniquely different. The one-size-fits-all approach does not work for investigations, operations or assisting victims, and law enforcement is hampered by lack of resources, lack of state-of-the-art equipment, and an often-outdated view of what these crimes look like.

Sex trafficking of children, youth and adults is a growing concern nationally and in Arizona. Trafficking is a hidden crime and is both an urban and rural issue affecting areas across our state. The first step in combatting trafficking is to identify victims so they can be recovered and offered services and help bring their perpetrators to justice.

In this presentation, participants will learn about the dynamics of sex trafficking, victim identification indicators, and risk factors. This presentation addresses what happens when law enforcement and NGOs work together to beat traffickers and buyers at their own game, and how these partnerships can help victims and build strong cases for prosecution.

Presenters:

  • Detective Michael Russo, Chandler Police Department Human Trafficking Unit
  • Stacey Sutherland, Program Director, TRUST AZ (Training and Resources United to Stop Trafficking)
